BENNINGTON, Vt. – Behind double figures from four different players, the Rensselaer men’s basketball team defeated Southern Vermont, 70-64, in non-conference action this evening. The Red Hawks improve to 2-3 on the season while the Mountaineers drop to 1-6 overall.
Southern Vermont held a 36-34 through the first half and continued to hang on until the 13 minute mark but an RPI three-pointer quickly pushed the Red Hawks ahead. The visitors went up by five and held on to seal the victory.
Senior forward Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh) led Rensselaer in scoring with 18 points and seven rebounds. Classmate Kris Kowalczyk (Troy, NY/Colonie) and junior Dan Rourke (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) poured in 13 points each while sophomore Ricky Philatre (Randolph, MA/Randolph) had 11 points.
The Mountaineers saw senior forward Nick Harrington (Brooklyn, NY) lead all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Joe Karnik (Castleton, NY) had 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Keith Gaston (Detroit, Mich.) added nine points, including three baskets midway through the second half that kept Southern Vermont in the game.
Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Wentworth Institute of Technology for a 3pm tip-off. The Mountaineers are idle until January.
