TROY, N.Y. – Powered by a pair of power play goals in the second period, Princeton University held Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) off the scoreboard for a 3-0 win at the Houston Field House this afternoon. The Tigers improve to 7-7-2 overall and 5-5-1 in conference play while the Engineers fall to 7-8-2 and 3-5-1 in the league.
Freshman Laura Martindale (Kingston, ON/NCCP Jr. Raiders) put the visiting Tigers on the board at 14:10 of the opening period after her shot from the far point slid underneath netminder Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros).
Gaining a 5-on-3 advantage early in the second stanza, Princeton senior Brittany Salmon (Batavia, NY/Nichols School) made it a two-goal lead when she tipped in a shot by freshman Sasha Sherry (Lehighton, PA/Shattuck St. Mary’s) at 3:26.
Sophomore Melanie Wallace (London, ON/London Jr. Devilettes) pushed the advantage to 3-0 less than two minutes later after finding the rebound of a Christine Foster (Burlington, ON/Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) shot in front of the net for the goal at 5:11.
Rensselaer, which was held to just seven shots through the first two periods, gained a slight 5-4 edge in the final period to finish with 12 shots in the game. Princeton posted 23 shots on goal, including 13 in the second period.
Junior goalie Kristen Young (Calgary, AB/Bowness Bruins) stopped all 12 shots she faced on the afternoon to improve to 7-7-2 overall. van der Bliek shouldered the loss for the Engineers, stopping 20 shots.
Both teams are now idle for the holiday season. Rensselaer returns to action with a two-game set against area and league-rival Union beginning January 4 at 7pm. Princeton is also back in action on January 4 when it heads to Connecticut for a pair of non-league games.
