Bears tally early for 4-1 victory over the Engineers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown saw four different players tally and sophomore goalie Nicole Stock posted 30 saves to lead the Bears to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer in ECACHL women’s hockey action this afternoon. With the victory, Brown improves to 10-15-2 overall and 6-13-1 in league play. The Engineers are now 12-18-1 and 8-11-1 in the ECACHL.

Brown opened the scoring mid-way through the first period with power play goals from sophomore Savannah Smith (Fort St. John, BC/BC Outback) and junior Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA/Cushing).

Smith gave the Bears the 1-0 lead at 14:45, converting a pass from Moore and senior Krystal Strassman (Madison, WI/Boston College) for the goal past RPI goalie Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers). Moore made it a two-goal cushion less than 30 seconds later as Smith and Strassman fed her the puck at 15:17.

Freshman winger Allysen Weidner (Wichita, KS/Shattuck St. Mary’s) pulled the Engineers to within one at the 3:29 mark of the second period with the assist going to linemate Allison Wright (Oakville, ON/Oakville Ice).

The Bears regained their two-goal advantage four minutes later as senior Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN/Blake School) scored past Mayr at 7:01.

Brown added a final tally in the third stanza from Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, Ontario/Toronto Midget Aeros) to close out the scoring for the victory.

Rensselaer, which outshot the Bears, 31-20 in the contest, saw Mayr finish with 16 saves in the loss.

The Engineers close out their regular season schedule next weekend, hosting Clarkson and nationally-ranked St. Lawrence on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (4pm) at the Houston Field House. Brown closes out its schedule on the road next weekend at nationally-ranked Dartmouth and Harvard.
