Greene Reaches Milestone with 64-51 Victory

TROY, N.Y. – Four players reached double digits in points to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 64-51 win over Vassar College in a Liberty League women’s basketball game at Robison Gym. With the win Rensselaer improves to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in the Liberty League. The victory is the 99th for sixth-year head coach John Greene, making him the winningest coach in the program’s history (99-56). Vassar falls to 6-16 and 1-11.

The Red Hawks jumped out to a 26-9 lead ten minutes into the first half and held a 39-24 advantage at halftime. RPI shot 57.1% from the floor in the opening frame, including 13 assists on its 16 baskets (16-of-28). Sophomore guard Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy) had six of the RPI’s assists. Defensively, the home team held the Brewers to just 26.5% (9-of-34) shooting in the first half. Senior guard Destany Eagles (Conway, SC/Conway Forest) had five of Rensselaer’s seven steals.

Eagles and sophomore guard Whitney Coleman (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda) both had team-highs of 12 points. Eagles also had four rebounds, two assists, and a game-high eight steals. Coleman added five rebounds, six assists, four steals, and a blocked shot.

Sophomore Elizabeth Barker (Springfield, MA/Cathedral) had 11 points while junior Tory Lyons (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) scored ten points. Senior forward Kristi Baranowski (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) had six points and ten rebounds in the win.

Greene set the all-time wins mark, which he shared with Kimberley Rybczyk. Rybczyk posted a 98-56 record in six seasons with the Red Hawks.

For Vassar, senior center Rachel Cerlen (Florham Park, NJ/Milburn) scored 12 points with nine rebounds, an assist, and a block while freshman forward Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) scored five points with ten rebounds. She also recorded two assists, a block, and a steal.

Rensselaer returns to action on Friday night at William Smith College. The Brewers also play again on Friday, traveling to Hamilton College. Both games are Liberty League games that begin at 6pm.
