GENEVA, N.Y. - Freshman forward Erin Cunningham (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) had game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead William Smith to a 60-45 win over Rensselaer in a Liberty League women's basketball game. The Herons improve to 13-10 overall and 7-6 in the league while the Red Hawks fall to 15-9 and 8-5.
With the score tied 10-10 at 11:26 of the first half, William Smith went on a 15-4 run to take a 25-14 lead with 5:54 remaining in the opening frame. The Herons maintained its lead and went into the lockerroom with a 33-23 advantage at the break.
RPI pulled to within five points (45-40) with 4:12 left in the second half but William Smith scored 15 of the game's final 20 points, including 13 from the free throw line, for the victory.
Two other Herons - Stephanie Czajkowski (14 points) and Marisa Vespa (11) - reached double digits in points in the win.
For Rensselaer, sophomore Whitney Coleman (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda) scored a team-high 15 points with five rebounds. She also had two blocks and two steals. Senior Kristi Baranowski (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added eight points and five rebounds.
The Red Hawks close out the regular season on Saturday at Hamilton College (2pm). William Smith's final regular season game is also Saturday, when it hosts Vassar College at 2pm.
