POTSDAM, N.Y. - Rensselaer scored twice within 20 seconds in the third period for a 3-2 lead but Clarkson scored the game-tying goal with just 3.3 seconds remaining and the ninth-ranked Golden Knights forced a 3-3 tie in an ECAC Hockey League men’s hockey game. RPI is now 9-15-8 overall and 5-10-5 in the league. Clarkson is 20-7-5 and 12-4-4.
With the point the Engineers move into a tie with Yale in ninth place. The Bulldogs play Dartmouth on Sunday before traveling to the Capital District for games next Friday and Saturday. The Knights remain in second place.
Rensselaer senior Oren Eizenman (Toronto, ON/Wexford Raiders) broke the ice with an even-strength marker at 14:49 of the first period. Freshman Peter Merth (New Westminster, BC/Burnaby Express) and sophomore Seth Klerer (Thornhill, ON/North York Rangers) assisted on the goal. The Golden Knights knotted the score just 1:19 later when captain Nick Dodge tallied his 16th of the season.
The score remained deadlocked until 11:36 of the second period when freshman Matt Beca scored a 5x3 power play goal.
A pair of power play goals just 20 seconds apart late in the third period put RPI ahead, 3-2. Senior captain Kirk MacDonald (Victoria, BC/Victoria Salsa) tied the game at 15:33 and freshman Paul Kerins (Weston, ON/North York Rangers) gave the visitors the lead at 15:53. MacDonald’s goal, which was set up by Klerer and Andrei Uryadov (St. Petersburgh, Russia/Kent School), came from the bottom of the right faceoff circle. Kerins scored from the right point. The Golden Knights tied the score with just 3.3 seconds remaining in the third period with a 6x4 goal by Beca.
Sophomore Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) made 29 saves for the Engineers while junior David Leggio stopped 29 shots for Clarkson.
Rensselaer closes out the regular season with a pair of home games against Brown and Yale next Friday and Saturday night. Both games begin at 7pm. Clarkson will be on the road for games at Quinnipiac and Princeton next weekend.
