TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Alison Domenico (Nepean, ON/Ottawa Raiders) scored the game-winner with just 1:40 remaining in the final period to propel fifth-ranked St. Lawrence University to a 2-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in ECACHL women’s hockey action.

The Saints, which clinched the second-seed with the win, improve to 25-6-3 with a 17-4-1 league mark. RPI, which saw sophomore goaltender Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) post a career-high 44 saves, falls to 12-20-1 and 8-13-1 in the ECACHL.

Domenico corralled a pass from sophomore center Marianna Locke (Brasher Falls, NY/North Country Ice Storm) in front of the net, taking a wide-open shot at Mayr, which deflected over her shoulder for the goal.

Despite a 15-3 shot advantage for the Saints in the first period, the Engineers struck first on freshman Allison Wright’s (Oakville, ON/Oakville Ice) seventh goal of the season. Wright settled a pass from classmate Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) in the slot, and shot the puck past Saints goalie Meaghan Guckian (Victor, NY/Victor) for the goal at 6:06. Sophomore Nicole McDonald (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Raiders) was credited with the second assist on the tally.

The Saints wasted little time in the second stanza with junior Sabrina Harbec (St. Hubert, PQ/Montreal Axion) scoring her 23rd goal of the year just 12 seconds into the period. Freshman Brittaney Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, AB/Edmonton Chinos) chipped the puck up from the left corner to Harbec, who lifted it behind Mayr for the goal.

Both teams gained 5-on-3 advantages in the middle frame, but neither could find the back of the net. Mayr came up big for RPI during the Saints power play, stopping six consecutive shots to keep things tied, 1-1 heading into the second intermission.

Guckian stopped 19 shots in the win, including nine in the final stanza. Mayr finished with 15 saves in each of the first two periods and 14 in the third.

Rensselaer, the eighth-seed, will battle top-seeded Dartmouth in next weekend’s best-of-three ECACHL quarterfinals beginning Friday at 4pm in Hanover, N.H. St. Lawrence secured the second-seed with the win and will host Clarkson on Friday in Canton, N.Y. (7pm).
