TROY, N.Y. – Eleven different student-athletes scored and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s (RPI) defense held Clarkson University to just 22.2% shooting in a 70-28 RPI victory in a Liberty League women’s basketball game at Robison Gym.
The homestanding Red Hawks held Clarkson to 25.0% (6-for-24) shooting in the first half on their way to a 34-14 lead at the break. RPI then gave up just six baskets on 30 attempts (20.0%) in the second half.
Rensselaer, which shot 43.1% (28-for-65) from the floor in the game, including 48.6% (17-for-35) in the second half, was led by Whitney Coleman (Etiwanda, CA/Etiwanda). The sophomore guard had game-highs of 13 points and 11 rebounds, with four assists and four steals. Three others had eight points apiece, including senior Destany Eagles (Conway, SC/Conway Forest), who also had three rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Clarkson had two players score a team-high five points, including senior forward Sarah Wesner (Sidney, NY/Sidney), who also had a team-best five rebounds.
With the victory, Rensselaer improves to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights are now 7-14 and 3-7.
Rensselaer is back in action on Friday night when it travels to Liberty League foe Skidmore College. Clarkson also plays next on Friday when it hosts William Smith in a league contest. Both games begin at 6pm.
