Crysti Howser scores two goals to lead Yale to victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Crysti Howser (Wilmette, IL/Assabet Midget) posted two goals, including the game-winning tally in the third period to lead Yale to a 4-3 victory over Rensselaer in ECACHL women’s ice hockey action this evening. The Bulldogs are now 14-10-2 with a 9-8-2 league mark. The Engineers fall to 12-17-1 and 8-10-1 in ECACHL play.

Despite being outshot 12-7 in the frame, the Bulldogs gained the 1-0 advantage late in the first period on Howser's goal.  Assisted by seniors Kristin Savard (Framingham, MA/Assabet Midget) and Sheila Zingler (Wausau, WI/Wisconsin Wild), Howser sent the puck past Rensselaer goalie Ashley Mayr (Burnaby, BC/BC Breakers) at 19:31.

Yale made it a 3-0 advantage in the second stanza with Zingler and sophomore Danielle Kozlowski (Melrose, MA/Chelmsford Midget) tallying goals at 7:18 and 19:09, respectively. Engineers’ sophomore Nicole McDonald (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Raiders) pulled RPI to within two (3-1) less than 20 seconds with an unassisted marker at 19:20.

Junior Brooke Thompson (Rochester, NY/Rochester Edge) cut the Bulldogs lead to 3-2 at the 9:28 mark of the third period with her team-leading seventh power play tally of the year, but Howser answered for Yale with her second goal of the evening at 9:48.

Sophomore Jamie-Lynn Stewart (Cambridge, ON/Cambridge Jr. Fury) added a tally with a minute remaining in the contest off a pass from freshman defenseman Laura Gersten (Queensbury, NY/Troy-Albany Ice Cats), but the Bulldogs held on for the victory behind 33 saves from junior netminder Shivon Zillis (Markham, ON/Aurora Panthers).

Mayr posted 18 saves in the loss for Rensselaer, which outshot Yale, 36-22 in the contest.

Rensselaer returns to the ice tomorrow afternoon at Brown (4pm). The Bulldogs are also in action on Saturday hosting Union (4pm).
