Baseball Finishes Florida Trip With 8-0 Record

ODESSA, Fla. - For the first time in the 23-year tenure of head coach Karl Steffen the Rensselaer baseball team went undefeated on its Florida training trip.  The Red Hawks finished their spring break schedule with an 8-0 record after defeating Widener, 13-3, at Fest Field.  RPI, the 23rd-ranked team in the nation, outscored its opponents 79-20.

Against the Pride, who fall to 8-3, Rensselaer was losing 3-1 after the first inning but the Red Hawks scored the final 12 runs of the game for the ten-run margin.  RPI finished with 18 hits on the afternoon.

Three Red Hawks went 3-for-5, including senior Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep), junior Eric Redding (Kerhonson, NY/Rondout Valley) and sophomore Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central).  Carroll, who had a two-run home run, also scored two runs with two runs batted in; Redding scored once and knocked in two; and Wilkes had two runs, two RBI, and a stolen base.  Senior Adam Lasek (Waterford, NY/Waterford) had two hits, including a double, with two runs batted in.

Freshman Andrew Mondo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) earned his second win of the season, striking out six in five innings.  He allowed three earned runs, five hits, and three walks.  Four other pitchers combined to allow no runs and just five hits over the final four innings.
