TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Lauren Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) tallied a game-high four goals to lead Oneonta State past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 9-6, in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Harkness Field. The win evens the Red Dragons record at 2-2, while the Red Hawks fall to 1-2.
Oneonta, which outshot Rensselaer, 14-6 in the half, came out firing in the opening frame, tallying its first goal on a shot by senior Erin Maybeck (Huntington Station, NY/Huntington) at 22:14. The Red Dragons added three more goals, including a second effort from Maybeck, to head into the halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
In the second half, Rensselaer freshman Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) made it 5-1 at the 26:11 mark with her eighth goal of the season, but Portnoy retained the five-goal advantage for the visiting Red Dragons at 19:35. With Oneonta holding a 9-2 lead at 9:19, the Red Hawks mounted a comeback, scoring four goals, to cut the deficit to three (9-6), but could not tie things up as time winded down.
In addition to Portnoy, Oneonta saw Maybeck tally two goals and senior Rachael Litts (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) record a goal and an assist. Junior Erika Krisak (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) and classmate Kristin O’Leary (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) each added a goal for the Red Dragons, which saw sophomore goalie Eileen O’Toole (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) make six saves in the win.
For Rensselaer, Fennessey, who also had an assist, and junior Natalie White (Guilford, CT/Guilford) added two goals each. Junior Morgan Wahl (Lexington, MA/Lexington) posted a goal and two assists, while sophomore Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) had a goal and Carly Strife (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) added an assist.
Freshmen Arianna Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill) and Emily Perkins (Bow, NH/Bow) split time in the cage for Rensselaer, making six and three saves, respectively.
Rensselaer returns to the field on Thursday afternoon for a non-conference match against Western New England College at Harkness Field (4pm). Oneonta St. is also back in action on Thursday when it hosts area-rival Hartwick at 4pm.
