TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) got goals from 13 different players and four goaltenders combined to make three saves as the Red Hawks defeated Cazenovia College, 19-0, in a non-league men’s lacrosse game at Harkness Field. Rensselaer improves to 4-0, while the Wildcats fall to 0-3.
RPI held a 6-0 lead after the first period – on goals from six different players – and an 11-0 advantage at halftime. Junior attack Alex MacDiarmid (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scored four first half goals while seven others had a goal apiece.
The Red Hawks extended their lead to 14-0 with three third quarter markers and then scored five more in the final stanza. Four of the fourth quarter goals came in a span of 1:42 midway through the quarter.
In addition to MacDiarmid, Rensselaer’s leading scorer, others with multiple goals were junior attack Tom O'Dwyer (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville), who scored three times, and freshman attack Joe Brust (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh), who had two goals.
Junior starter John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem) earned the win in goal for RPI. Sophomore Erik Tice (Leeds, NY/Cairo-Durham), who made 11 saves, suffered the loss for Cazenovia.
Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday afternoon when its hosts Liberty League foe Vassar College at 1pm at Harkness Field. The Wildcats travel to the University of Scranton for a non-league game on Friday afternoon (1pm).
