Men's Hockey Loses; Falls Behind in Series

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Mark Dekanich (N. Vancouver, BC) made 16 saves and three different players scored to lead Colgate to a 3-1 win over Rensselaer. The Raiders, who improve to 14-19-4, takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three ECAC Hockey League first round series. Rensselaer falls to 10-17-8. The same two teams meet again on Saturday night at Starr Rink in Hamilton.

Colgate opened a 2-0 lead after the first period with a pair of power play goals. Sophomore forward Tom Riley (Ottawa, ON) broke the ice when his dump-in off the left side boards took an odd bounce and headed straight into the net. Rensselaer goaltender Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria) had vacated the crease to play the ring-around and could not get back in time. Defenseman Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, PQ) and senior Marc Fulton (Vancouver, BC) were credited with the assists on the goal, which came at the 2:06 mark.

The Raiders doubled their lead when Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, ON) scored on a scramble in front of the net 14 minutes later. Tyler Burton (Langley, BC) and Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, BC) earned the assists.

Rensselaer senior forward Oren Eizenman (Toronto, ON) cut the Engineers deficit in half when he scored a power play goal from the middle of the right faceoff circle early in the second period. Sophomore Andrei Uryadov (St. Petersburg, Russia) picked up the primary assist while senior Jake Luthi (Palmer, AK) tallied the secondary on the goal, which came at 25 seconds of the second period.

Freshman David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, ON) put the Raiders back ahead by two goals when he scored on a wristshot from the left faceoff circle at 7:18 of the third period. Burton tallied the lone assist on the play.

Lange had 16 saves for Rensselaer.
