TROY, N.Y. – Freshman John Dreimiller (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) pitched a complete game, four-hitter to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 3-1 win over St. Lawrence University in the first game of a Liberty League doubleheader at Robison Field. The Saints came back to earn the split, winning the second game, 7-6.
RPI, the 13th-ranked team in the nation, is now 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the league. St. Lawrence is 7-5 and 3-3. The two teams also split a doubleheader on Friday.
Dreimiller improved his record to 2-1 with the help of four strikeouts in 7.0 innings. In addition to allowing four hits, he gave up just one earned run with three walks. Offensively, Rensselaer scored three runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by junior shortstop Matt Muscatiello (Kinderhook, NY/Ichabod Crane). St. Lawrence, which was the home team in both games, scored its only run on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Ford (Fabius, NY/Fabius-Pompey) in the fifth inning.
In the nightcap, the Saints scored four runs in the second inning and three more in the sixth for a come-from-behind win. They had five hits, including a two-run double by sophomore outfielder Matt Carrigg (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell), in the second inning and one in the sixth. RPI, which scored single runs in the first, second, third, fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, was held without a hit in the final two frames.
Reliever Troy Lassial (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg) earned the win, while freshman Ryan Duff (Concord, MA/Cushing Academy) garnered the save. Duff struck out five batters in the final 2.2 innings of work. Carrigg finished with three hits, including a double, two runs, and two runs batted in to lead the offense.
Rensselaer second baseman Shane Griffin (Hudson, NY/Hudson) had three hits in four at bats, including a double, with two runs scored. Four other Red Hawks had two hits in the game. Senior starter Luke Calzone (Bethel, CT/Bethel) suffered the loss.
RPI returns to the field on Tuesday when it hosts Castleton St. at Robison Field in a non-league contest (4pm). St. Lawrence hosts Oswego St. on Wednesday at 4pm.
