ODESSA, Fla. – Senior Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) went 5-for-5 and the Red Hawks scored ten runs in the third inning as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team defeated Husson College, 16-4, at Fest Field. With the win, 23rd-ranked Rensselaer, which had 18 hits, improves to 5-0. The Eagles fall to 1-2.
Carroll, a first baseman/pitcher, tied the school record for hits in a game with five, including four singles and a home run. He also scored four runs, knocked in two, and stole a base. He closed out the game by pitching the ninth inning.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Red Hawks took the lead with four runs in the second. They added 10 more in the third on eight hits, including a two-run single by freshman Camden Mamigonian (Dover, NH/Dover) and a two-run double by sophomore Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central).
Mamigonian and Wilkes both finished with two hits, a run and three RBI. Senior Adam Lasek (Waterford, NY/Waterford) added three hits, two runs, a run batted in, and a stolen base and freshman Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) had a double, two runs, and two RBI.
Sophomore Andy Opperman (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing just three hits and one run with six strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory.
