CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Junior Beth Gargon (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) had two home runs and seven runs batted in during the first game and sophomore Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) had three hits, four runs, and two RBI in the second game as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team defeated Alverno College, 14-3, and St. John Fisher, 13-5.

The Red Hawks (4-2) scored once in the first inning, four times in the second, three in the third, and six in the fourth inning on their way to a five-inning win over Alverno. Gargon scored twice and plated seven runs with a pair of homers, including a grand slam. Freshman Christina Ciccione (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge), who also homored, scored two runs and knocked in three, while senior Courtney Sweeney (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) added three hits, including a double.

Freshman Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit and one run with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

In its second game, Rensselaer scored three runs in four different innings and a single run in the third for the 13-5 win over the Cardinals. In addition to Finkbeiner, who had a single, a double, and a triple, Ciccione had two hits, including a double, a run, and four runs batted, while senior Katherine Valenta (LaGrange, IL/Lyons Township) had two hits, a run, and three RBI.

Sophomore Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse) pitched five innings, allowing just two earned runs and a walk while striking out four to earn the win. Bianchetti pitched the final two innings.
