ODESSA, Fla. - Three pitchers combined to allow just three runs on nine hits and Rensselaer scored nine runs in the final two innings for a 10-3 win over John Jay at Fest Field. With the win the 23rd-ranked Red Hawks improve to 6-0 on the young season, including scoring at least nine runs in five contests. The Bloodhounds fall to 0-4.
Rensselaer starter Luke Calzone (Bethel, CT/Bethel) pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Sophomore Andrew Novick (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) gave up just three singles and no runs with three strikeouts in the next two innings to earn the win. Junior Tim Klein (Westwood, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) earned the save, his second of the year, by allowing no hits or runs with two strikeouts in the final two innings.
Offensively, Rensselaer took the lead with four runs in the seventh inning (5-3) before scoring five more in the ninth for the seven-run margin. Junior Eric Redding (Kerhonkson, NY/Rondout Valley) put the Red Hawks ahead with a sacrifice fly that scored senior Adam Lasek (Waterford, NY/Waterford) in the seventh inning.
Lasek finished with three hits, two runs, two runs batted in, and a stolen base. Classmates Jason Pollard (Hudson, NY/Hudson) and Kevin Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) combined for three hits, three runs, four RBI, and a pair of stolen bases.
