Zongol and Klein combine to lead Red Hawks to win over Fisher

ODESSA, Fla. – Junior starter Joe Zongol (Flower Mound, TX/Southington) struck out eight batters in 7.2 innings and classmate Tim Klein (Westwood, NJ/St. Joseph Regional) earned his third save to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 3-2 win over St. John Fisher at Fest Field. With the win, the 23rd-ranked Red Hawks improve to 7-0. The Cardinals are now 4-2.

Zongol, a lefthander, allowed just five hits and one walk with no earned runs in picking up his first victory of the season. Klein pitched the final 1.1 without giving up any hits or walks.

Senior Jason Pollard (Hudson, NY/Hudson) put Rensselaer ahead with a leadoff home run to left centerfield in the bottom of the first inning. RPI tacked on two more runs without getting a hit in the sixth inning. With one out, Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) reached first base on a wild pitch on a third strike. He stole second base and moved to third base on a groundout. Adam Lasek (Waterford, NY/Waterford) then walked and stole second base and he and Carroll scored on a third strike wild pitch with Patrick Reardon (Troy, NY/LaSalle Institute) beating the throw to first base.

Junior starter Ryan Hanson (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run for the Cardinals.
