Fennessey scores both goals in Red Hawks loss

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) scored a game-high four goals and eight other players tallied to lead Union College to an 18-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League women’s lacrosse action this evening. The Dutchwomen improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play while the Red Hawks fall to 2-6 with an 0-3 Liberty League record.

Union came out firing in the opening half, outscoring the homestanding Red Hawks, 10-2 in the first half. The Dutchwomen scored the games first seven goals, including a pair of goals from Cronan, junior Keri Messa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Hotchkiss School) and freshman Allie Cuozzo (Norfolk, MA/King Phillip Regional).

RPI freshman Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) cut the Union lead to six at 11:48 and added her team-leading 16th goal with 21 seconds left but the Dutchwomen added another tally as time winded down.

The Dutchwomen dominated the second half with eight goals, including another pair from Cronan as well as two from freshman Steph Egizi (Westwood, MA/Westwood).

In addition to Cronan, who also added an assist, the Dutchwomen saw Cuozzo score three goals with two assists. Egizi finished with three goals while Messa had two goals and an assist. Four other players added a goal each.

Junior Stephanie Boulton (Coquitlam, BC/Milton Academy) picked up the win for Union, recording five saves before giving way to freshman Johanna Lou (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) in the final 20 minutes. She posted three saves.

RPI saw junior Natalie White (Guilford, CT/Guilford) record an assist on Fennessey’s second goal. Freshman Emily Perkins (Bow, NH/Bow) made five saves in the loss for RPI while classmate Arianna Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill), who took over in the cage in the second half made seven saves.

Rensselaer is back in action this weekend when it hosts North Country rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively.
