Baseball Drops Game to Hawks

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Sophomore righthander Jonathon Shanks (Millbrook, NY) scattered nine hits while allowing just two runs in a complete game win to lead SUNY New Paltz to a 5-2 win over Rensselaer in a non-league baseball game.  The homestanding Hawks improve to 9-12 while the Red Hawks, the 16th-ranked team in the nation, fall to 12-5.

Shanks improved his personal record to 3-1 by striking out three batters while allowing four walks.  The two runs he allowed were both earned.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when New Paltz scored four times.  RPI cut the deficit in half in the eighth inning but the Hawks added one in their half of the inning.  New Paltz held Rensselaer off the scoreboard in the ninth.

Senior Luke Calzone (Bethel, CT/Bethel), the fifth of eight Red Hawks pitchers used, suffered the loss.  Offensively, junior Shane Griffin (Hudson, NY/Hudson) was 3 for 4 and senior Jason Pollard (Hudson, NY/Hudson) was 2 for 2 with two HBPs.

Two New Paltz players had two hits apiece to lead the home team at the plate.
