CANTON, N.Y. - Rensselaer opened a 5-0 lead after two innings in the first game and then scored seven runs in the third inning of game two on its way to a doubleheader sweep, 5-1 and 9-1 in five innings, at St. Lawrence. RPI improves to 15-5 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League while the Saints fall to 6-10-1 and 0-2.
Sophomore pitcher Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse) paced the visitors to the game one victory, allowing just three hits and one unearned run. She struck out 11 with five walks. Junior first baseman Beth Gargon (East Hampton, CT/East Hampton) was the hitting star, going 2 for 2 with two runs. Sophomore Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor) added a home run and three runs batted in for the Red Hawks.
The second game saw RPI score nine runs on 11 hits, let by sophomore Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville), who was 3 for 3, including a triple, with two runs and an RBI. Gargon was 2 for 3 with a run and three runs batted in. Freshman pitcher Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) gave up just two hits and one unearned run with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings. She walked one.
