TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) tallied four goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s lacrosse team to a 10-9 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence University this afternoon. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Saints fall to 4-7 and 3-5 in the Liberty League.
Rensselaer came out strong in the opening half, taking a 2-0 lead at the 26:40 mark behind goals from Fennessey and sophomore Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs). Down 3-0 with 19:53 remaining, freshman Julie Wooters (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) cut the deficit to two, but RPI went on a three-goal run for a 6-1 advantage at 12:58.
Sophomore Amanda Forbes (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls) cut the deficit to four with a pair of goals late in the quarter, but the Red Hawks netted two goals, including a free position marker from junior Morgan Wahl (Lexington, MA/Lexington) for a 9-3 lead at the halftime.
The Saints powered their way back into the contest in the second half, scoring five consecutive goals, including two from Forbes to make it a 9-8 Rensselaer advantage with 8:29 remaining. The Red Hawks made a late charge down the field with sophomore Carly Mahony (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet Regional) scoring her sixth of the season for a two-goal lead with just under four minutes left. Sophomore Brittany Misercola (Watertown, NY/Watertown) pulled the Saints back to within one with 2:03 left, but RPI maintained possession to hang on for the win.
In addition to Fennessey, RPI saw Clark tally two goals and an assist. Wahl added two goals while freshman Kathy Rogers (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Emily Perkins (Bow, NH/Bow), a freshman, picked up the win in goal making nine saves.
For St. Lawrence, Forbes tallied a team-best four goals while Misercola had two tallies. Wooters and senior Kathryn Durki (Canton, NY/Hugh C. Williams) both had a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Becky Timbers (Underhill, VT/Mt. Mansfield Union) shouldered the loss for the Saints making eight saves.
Rensselaer returns to action on Friday for a Liberty League contest at Rochester (4pm). The Saints are back on the field on April 22 with a game at Geneseo.
