TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore righthander Beth Ameno (Buffalo, NY/John F. Kennedy) did not allow a run in pitching two complete games to lead the University of Rochester to a Liberty League doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 1-0 and 7-0, at Doris Robison Field.
Rochester is now 18-5 overall and 6-0 in the league while RPI falls to 15-7 and 2-2.
Ameno allowed just three singles while striking out seven with just one walk in the first game. Senior shortstop Jena Robertson (Tulsa, OK/Tulsa Hale) provided the only offense with a home run for the win. She hit her homer over the left field wall to lead off the fourth inning. Robertson finished by going 2 for 2 with a walk.
Rensselaer sophomore Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse) also pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks.
The second game saw Ameno allow just three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. All three hits allowed were singles. She also had two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI.
Rochester jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings of the second game, including a five-run first inning. Junior Jess Sorrentino (N. Bellmore, NY/Mepham) opened the game with a home run to right center field. Two walks and two singles, including a two-run base hit from junior Alicia Citro (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough), made it 5-0 after one. Sam Carr’s (Fairport, NY/Fairport) second inning single scored Rachel Skellie (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) for Rochester’s sixth run and the Yellowjackets added another in the third on a double by Citro.
Citro and Skellie both finished with two hits. Citro also scored a run and knocked in two while Skellie scored once.
RPI starter Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) pitched 2.1 innings in suffering the loss. Street finished the game in relief, striking out nine in 4.2 innings.
RPI returns to action on Monday with a home doubleheader against city-rival Russell Sage College. First pitch is 3pm. Rochester is back on the field on Wednesday hosting at twinbill against Utica (4pm).
