TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse) and freshman Michelle Bianchetti (Highland Mills, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) both threw complete game shutouts to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to non-league victories over city-rival Russell Sage College at Doris Robison Field. RPI won the first game 11-0 in five innings and the second by a score of 2-0.
Rensselaer improves to 17-7 while Sage falls to 0-18.
In the opener, the homestanding Red Hawks scored 11 unearned runs in the first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run to left field by sophomore Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor), on their way to the victory. Street allowed just two hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Denis Breault (Castleton, NY) suffered the loss.
Bianchetti gave up just three hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 7.0 innings in game two. Offensively the Red Hawks scored both of their runs in the third inning. Sophomore shortstop Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) had two of RPI’s five hits. She also scored a run. Sophomore Melissa McConville (Colonie, NY) took the loss for the Gators.
Rensselaer is back in action on Wednesday at 3:30pm when it hosts Mount Saint Mary in a non-league doubleheader at Doris Robison Field. Sage travels to SUNY IT for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3pm.
