SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore grabbed a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and sophomore Nick Coppola added a game-best three goals as the Thoroughbreds defeated Rensselaer, 12-7, in Liberty League men’s lacrosse action this afternoon. With the win, Skidmore improves to 6-6 and remain undefeated in the league at 5-0. The Red Hawks fall to 10-3 with a 3-2 conference record.
Skidmore held a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and a 7-3 advantage at halftime. The Red Hawks scored two goals to cut the deficit to three (8-5) with 7:03 remaining in the third quarter led by a man-up goal from sophomore Josh Secora (Golden, CO/Evergreen), but the homestanding Thoroughbreds went on to score three straight goals for a 11-5 lead heading into the final frame.
Juniors Alex MacDiarmid (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) and PJ McComb (Newington, CT/Newington) each added a goal in the fourth quarter but the Red Hawks could not overcome the five-goal deficit.
In addition to Coppola, senior Micah Hawes-Sivitz (Conway, MA/Northfield Mt. Hermon) added three goals and an assist in the win. Classmate Chuck McNeill (Spencer, MA/Williston Northampton) chipped in with two goals and an assist while netminder John Capitani (Garden City, finished with 14 saves, including four in each of the last three quarters.
Rensselaer was led offensively by McComb, who posted two goals and three assists. Junior Mike Sampson (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) had two goals and an assist while MacDiarmid added a goal. Junior John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem) and senior Ryan Michels (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) to make 11 saves in goal for the Red Hawks.
RPI is back in action on Saturday in the regular season finale at Clarkson University beginning at 1pm. Skidmore, which clinched a home playoff game in the win over the Red Hawks, also returns to field on Saturday at St. Lawrence (2pm).
