TROY, N.Y. – Led by four goals and two assists from sophomore Laura Flynn (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley), the Skidmore College women’s lacrosse team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 13-6, in the season finale for both teams at Harkness Field. The Thoroughbreds finish with 2-13 and 1-7 in the league while the Red Hawks end the season with a 4-10 record, going 2-6 in conference play.
Skidmore jumped out to a 4-0 lead at 17:43 of the first half, including a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart to open the game. Rensselaer’s Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) cut the Red Hawks’ deficit to three (4-1) at the 16:05 mark, but the Thoroughbreds rallied for six straight goals, including two each from Flynn and sophomore Elise Britt (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) for a 10-1 lead at halftime.
The Red Hawks came out firing in the first half with two quick goals through the first ten minutes, but Skidmore responded with three of their own for a 13-3 advantage at 10:45. Led by back-to-back goals from sophomore Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs), Rensselaer attempted a comeback as time winded down, cutting the deficit to eight with around three minutes left to play, but were unable to even things up.
In addition to Flynn, Skidmore saw sophomore Jordan McManama (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) tally three goals. Britt added two goals and an assist and four other players had multiple points. Sophomore Courtney DeStefano (Rehoboth, MA/Moses Brown School) picked up the win in goal making nine saves.
For Rensselaer, four different players scored led by Clark, who finished with two. Fennessey added a pair of tallies as well while senior Andrea Flynn (Guilford, CT/Guilford) and sophomore Carly Mahony (Topsfield, MA/Masconomet Regional) each added a goal. Freshman Emily Perkins (Bow, NH/Bow) shouldered the loss for the Red Hawks, making five saves in the first half. Classmate Ariana Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill), who played the second half in relief, finished with four saves.
