TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore lefthander Ed Reilly (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) allowed just one earned run over 7.2 innings and the Skidmore College defense turned four double plays to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 10-3 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the second game of the four-team, double elimination Liberty League Tournament at Robison Field.
Skidmore, the fourth seed, improves to 18-18 and advances to the winners’ bracket against St. Lawrence on Saturday at 9:30am. The Saints defeated Rochester, 6-5, in the first game. The top-seeded Red Hawks, the 17th-ranked team in the nation, fall to 28-9 and face the Yellowjackets Saturday at 1pm. The loss snapped a nine-game RPI winning streak.
Reilly, who missed a large portion of the season with an injury, allowed two runs on ten hits – all singles – while walking none and striking out none. He is now 2-1 on the season.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Skidmore came back and scored three runs in the top of the fifth with the help of a walk, a hit batsman and three infield singles. RPI scored once in the sixth inning to pull within 3-2 but the Thoroughbreds scored seven runs in the final three innings, including four in the seventh inning, one in the eighth and two in the ninth inning for the final margin.
Offensively for the visitors, who stole six bases, five student-athletes had multiple hits, including four of the first five hitters in their lineup. Leadoff hitter Anthony Ferri (Jersey City, NJ/Loomis Chaffee) led the way, going 3 for 5 with three runs and three stolen bases. Clean-up hitter Greg Carlow (Mystic, CT/Fitch) was 2 for 4 with two RBI while fifth-place hitter Jake Mendell (St. George, VT/Champlain Valley) was 2 for 5 with two runs.
For Rensselaer, sophomore Sean Wilkes (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) was 2 for 4 with two runs and classmate Dan Feenan (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Freshman John Dreimiller (Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) took the loss on the mound, allowing six runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings.
