TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Lauren Peterson’s (Abingdon, MD/Harford Tech) two-out triple in the top of the sixth inning lifted Alfred University to a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the first game of the four-team, double elimination ECAC Tournament at Doris Robison Field.
The Saxons, the fourth seed, improve to 22-14 and advance to the winners’ bracket against the winner of the second game, which features Union College, the second seed, against third-seeded St. John Fisher College. That game begins at 4pm on Saturday. The Red Hawks (24-9), the top-seed and host, play an elimination game at 2pm.
With Rensselaer leading 1-0 after an RBI ground out by freshman Becky Bailey (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) in the second inning, the Saxons took the lead with three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth.
After a walk to Karen Folts (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan Academy), freshman pitcher Ilana Price (Wilton, CT/Brien McMahon) reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing up Peterson, who sent a long shot to the gap in right field. Shortstop Jesika LeBarron (Campbell, NY/Corning West) followed with an RBI single to give the visiting team at 3-1 lead.
Peterson finished 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI while LeBarron was 1 for 3 with an RBI. In the circle, Price allowed just five hits and one unearned run while striking out three with two walks in 7.0 innings.
For the Red Hawks, sophomore hurler Michelle Street (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) struck out 15 in the complete game loss. She allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits with one walk. Freshman third baseman Kate Stira (Durham, CT/Coginchaug) was 2 for 3 with a run scored and three others had a hit for Rensselaer, which saw its six-game winning streak come to an end.
