Calzone Pitches Baseball to Ninth Straight Win

Senior strikes out 10 in complete game 8-1 win over league foe Vassar

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Luke Calzone (Bethel, CT/Bethel) struck out ten while allowing just six hits to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball to an 8-1 win over Vassar College in the second game of a Liberty League doubleheader at Robison Field.

RPI, which won the first game, 3-0, improves to 28-8, including nine straight wins and 14 victories in its last 15 contests. The Red Hawks conclude the regular season with a 16-4 league mark. Vassar finishes its season at 5-24 overall and 2-17 in the Liberty League.

Calzone, a lefthander, gave up four singles, a double and a home run to improve to 4-2. He walked just two and hit one batter in 9.0 innings. Vassar’s Quinn Robinson (Douglas, WY/Douglas), a senior, also pitched a complete game, allowing ten hits and four earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts in 8.0 innings.

At the plate Rensselaer scored once in the first inning, four times in the third, once in the fourth and twice in the sixth inning. Sophomore second baseman Dan Feenan (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) led the way by going 3 for 4 with a run and a stolen base. Senior first baseman Ken Carroll (Shelton, CT/Fairfield Prep) was 2 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBI, while junior outfielder Dan Valentine (Goshen, CT/Avon Old Farms) had a double, two runs and a stolen base.

Designated hitter Matt Elias (Brooklyn, NY/Berkeley-Carroll) had two of Vassar’s hits, including a home run to right field.

Rensselaer won the first game, 3-0, behind a complete-game, two-hit shutout by junior lefthander Joe Zongol (Flower Mound, TX/Southington). With that victory the Red Hawks clinched the Liberty League’s regular season title and the right to host next weekend’s post-season tournament.
