TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Jacquelyn Garlasco’s (Paramus, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) goal at 55:17 in the second half proved to be the game-winner as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s soccer team opened their season with a 2-0 victory over SUNY New Paltz in the Red Hawks/Dutchwomen Classic at Harkness Field. This was the first match of the season for both teams.
After battling through a scoreless first half, which saw Rensselaer hold a 5-2 advantage in shots, the homestanding Red Hawks finally got on the board in the second frame on Garlasco’s goal. Taking the initial corner kick on the play, Garlasco lobbed her own rebound through traffic and over the goaltender’s head into the right corner of the goal.
Freshman Danielle Redmond (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional) gave Rensselaer a two goal cushion when she caught a pass from senior Sarah Briggs (Mount Desert, ME/Ellsworth) and scored past the left side of the Hawks goalie.
In goal for the Red Hawks, freshman Meghan White (Kingston, NY/Kingston) posted one save. Nora Wescott (Howard Beach, NY/St. Francis Prep), also a freshman, made eight stops in the New Paltz net.
Rensselaer returns to action on Sunday at 2pm against Husson College, while the Hawks face Union College at 4:30pm.
