Box Score
PURCHASE, N.Y. – St. John Fisher scored a goal in each half, including two in the second frame to defeat Rensselaer, 3-1 in the third game of the Valiants Classic, hosted by Manhattanville. The Cardinals are now 4-1-0 overall while the Red Hawks drop to 3-2-1 on the season.
The Cardinals, who outshot RPI, 25-14, in the contest, jumped out to the early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Luke Lennox (Rochester, NY/Harley). Lennox’s shot at 18:18 made its way past RPI goalie Jeffrey Krywanczyk (Chazy, NY/Chazy Central Rural) for the opening tally.
In the second half, St. John Fisher freshman Andrew Hynes made it a two-goal cushion when his shot to the right of the net slid past a diving Krywanczyk at 52:50. Later in the frame, freshman Andrew McIntosh (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) sent a hard shot past the RPI goalie for the 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Kevin Swift (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) attempted to pull the Red Hawks back into the game at 83:36. Off a re-start kick by senior Aaron Gundle (Portland, OR/Lincoln), Swift put it past the Cardinals goalie, but that would be their only chance.
Freshman goaltender Adam Durst posted seven saves in the winning effort. Rensselaer starter Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) stopped two shots in the first 18:00 before giving way to Krywanczyk, who stopped six shots in the loss.
St. John Fisher returns to action on Tuesday with a 4pm contest at Oneonta State. The Red Hawks open their Liberty League schedule on Friday and Saturday on the road at St. Lawrence (4pm) and Clarkson (2pm).
