TROY, N.Y. – Backed by a goal and an assist from sophomore Amanda Nicklin (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s soccer team picked up its first Liberty League victory of the season with 2-0 win over Clarkson University. The Red Hawks are now 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. The Golden Knights drop to 1-4-2 and 0-1-1 in the Liberty League.

Nicklin gave the homestanding Red Hawks a 1-0 lead in the opening half with her second goal in as many days. On a cross from midfielder Heather Lautman (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial), Nicklin volleyed the ball up over the goalie’s head into the top right corner for the goal at 22:53.

Rensselaer, which outshot the Golden Knights, 5-1, in the first half, had a chance to gain a two-goal cushion with under six minutes remaining when sophomore Jessica Batty (Lexington, MA/Lexington) sent a perfect ball in off a corner kick, but nobody was there to connect.

Freshman Tracy Breslin (Latham, NY/Shaker) made it a 2-0 advantage for RPI in the second half with her first collegiate goal. Nicklin earned the assist on the tally after she corralled her own rebound, sending a perfect cross to Breslin, who headed the ball in for the goal at 73:19.

Freshman Meghan White (Kingston, NY/Kingston) recorded four saves in the win for RPI. For the Knights, senior Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) also made four stops.

Rensselaer returns to action on Tuesday at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (4pm). The Golden Knights host area and league-rival St. Lawrence on Thursday (4pm).
