Engineers defeat Susquehanna in Liberty League contest

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Rensselaer football team scored three times in the second quarter, including two touchdowns, and the Engineers’ defeat held Susquehanna to -4 yards rushing on their way to defeating Susquehanna, 37-14, in a Liberty League contest. RPI improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Crusaders are fall to 1-4 and 0-2.

After Susquehanna scored in the first quarter, freshman running back Bob Munier (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) scored from five yards out, freshman Nick Lalumia (Maywood, NJ/St. Peters Prep.) kicked a 23-yard field goal and senior wide receiver Brendan McGowan (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View) caught a one-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jimmy Robertson (Yonkers, NY/Iona Prep) with 12 seconds left in the opening half for a 16-7 lead at the break.

Robertson added a one-yard touchdown run of his own in the third quarter, followed by a seven-yard run by freshman running back Nick Costa (Yonkers, NY/Iona Prep) and a 22-yard run by junior back Isaac Williams (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders added a late score for the final margin.

Munier finished with 101 yards rushing on 22 carries while Williams ran for 59 yards on seven attempts. Robertson completed 16 of 23 passes for 235 yards, including 11 completions to McGowan. He finished with 91 receiving yards.

Defensively, senior linebacker Tom Rayhill (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) made a team-high eight tackles, including five unassisted, with a pass breakup. Sophomore Tim Acker (Arlington, WA/Arlington) made six tackles - all solos - with three sacks for a loss of 26 yards and two interceptions.

Rensselaer returns to action next Saturday when St. Lawrence visits ’86 Field for a 1pm kickoff. Susquehanna is home next week when Hobart visits Loprado Field (7pm).
