TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) registered 17 shots while holding Hartwick College to three and the homestanding Red Hawks defeated the Hawks, 3-0, in a Division III field hockey game at Harkness Field. RPI, which got goals from three different players, improves to 2-1. Hartwick falls to 1-1.
The Red Hawks opened the scoring in the first half on a tally by junior Sara Stylinski (Southington, CT/Southington), who scored on a rebound. Sophomore Megan McNamara (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) earned the assist after her shot at the goal landed on the stick of Stylinski, who lifted it past goalie Katie Thorpe (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor) at 7:54.
Holding a 14-4 shot advantage at halftime, the Red Hawks opened a two-goal lead early in the second half when junior Kerri Clark (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) knocked in a loose ball near the side of the goal. In an attempt to cover the ball, Thorpe lost control and the ball sailed out to Clark, who scored.
Freshman Sandy Turnbull (Upperville, VA/Chatham Hall) gave the homestanding Red Hawks a 3-0 advantage at 63:27 after dribbling the ball into the arc, ducking around a defender and sending a shot into the goal.
Sophomore Kate Williams (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) earned the win in the box, stopping the three shots she faced. Thorpe finished with 14 saves in suffering the loss.
Rensselaer returns to action on Saturday at William Paterson (2:30pm). Hartwick also returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts Scranton at 1pm.
