Box Score
SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior Raffaele Lauretta (Saddle Brook, NJ) scored two first-half goals to lead the Ramapo men’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Union Classic Friday Evening. Ramapo remains undefeated on the season at 4-0-0, while RPI drops to 1-1-1.
Ramapo held a 3-0 lead after the first half, but the two teams each had six shots on net through 45 minutes of play. Giuseppe Trani (Wayne, NJ) opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a low-angle shot on the ground. David Marin (Clifton, NJ) fed the ball up in the right side of the box where Trani carried it seemingly to the end line before firing.
Marin connected with Lauretta to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead less than three minutes later. Marin passed to Lauretta in the left side of the box as Lauretta sent the ball low past the right of Rensselaer goalkeeper Alex Penny (Northport, NY). Lauretta then put home a rebound to net his second goal of the night in the 21st minute.
Rensselaer’s Michael Long (Hopkinton, NH) had a chance to put the Red Hawks on the board in the 25th minute, but Ramapo netminder Ian Tighe (Wyckoff, NJ) nabbed his direct kick from 18 yards out just inside the near post.
The teams played a closer second half until senior defender Bryan Choma (Middletown, NJ) knocked in a header in the 73rd minute to put the Roadrunners up, 4-0.
With just over two minutes left in the game, RPI freshman Julian Connor (Montclair, NJ) had a clear shot from the left side of the box, only to have his laser sail just right of the far post.
Penny made two saves for the Red Hawks, while Tighe made nine saves in his second shutout of the season.
RPI will face New Paltz in the second day of the tournament at 4 pm, while Ramapo will follow, taking on host Union at 6:30 pm
