TROY, N.Y. – The Colgate University Raiders scored twice in the second and twice in the third period to defeat the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team, 4-0. Senior Mark Anderson scored twice for the Raiders and two of the goals the Raiders scored were shorthanded.
The Raiders improve to 2-4-2 in the ECAC and 8-9-3 overall. The Engineers fall to 8-12-3 and 3-4-2 in the ECAC.
The Engineers got off to a quick start, outshooting the Raiders, 12-3, in the first period, but did not capitalize.
The Raiders started the scoring in the second with a shorthanded goal. Junior defensman Mark Anderson received a pass on a two-on-one from sophomore Jason Williams. Anderson one-timed the puck past Engineer goaltender Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the second period the Raiders took the 2-0 lead when senior Dustin Gillanders redirected a pass from junior Peter Bogdanich that found its way over Lange and off the crossbar.
In the third period the Raiders scored twice more. Anderson scored his second of the game when he took a shot from the point. Lange was screened and did not see the shot as it went past him. David McIntyre and Brian Day picked up the assists on the goal.
The Raiders closed the scoring as sophomore Ethan Cox took a bad angle shot that deflected off of Lange and into the net.
Senior Mark Dekanich picked up the shutout and finished with 28 saves, including numerous outstanding stops, to earn the win. Lange had 23 saves for RPI.
The Engineers will take on Union in a home-and-home series next weekend, Friday at Union and Saturday at home. Both games begin at 7pm. Colgate will host Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend.
