Red Hawks build first half lead, hang on for victory

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s basketball team built a seven point first half lead and held on to defeat Middlebury 62-55 at Robison Gym, this afternoon. With the victory the Red Hawks close out their non-conference schedule with a 5-5 overall record. The Panthers fall to 8-4 on the season.

After falling behind, 2-0, the Red Hawks scored the next six points, and never trailed again. Leading by as many as nine points, Rensselaer took a 32-25 lead in halftime.

A pair of Missy Jackman (Danvers, MA/Danvers) free-throws with 11:31 remaining in the game gave the Red Hawks their largest lead of the game at 49-36.

The Panthers cut the Rensselaer lead to 54-48 with 8:04 to play on an Emily Johnson (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Mt. St. Joseph) lay-up. Tory Lyons (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) pushed the Red Hawks advantage to 10 points with just under two minutes to go.

Lyons led all scorers with 18 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. Jackman added 15 points, six boards and three assists, while junior Elizabeth Barker (Suffield, CT/Cathedral) recorded 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Senior guard Katie Fisher (Oakland, CA/College Prep School) paced Middlebury with 16 points. She was followed by Johnson and Lani Young (Concord, NH/Concord), who had 13 points apiece.

Rensselaer is back in action next Friday (6pm) and Saturday (2pm) when it hosts William Smith and Hamilton, respectively.
