TROY, N.Y. – William Smith College shot 52.1% from the field for a season-high 92 points and the Herons defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 92-68, in the Liberty League opener for both teams. William Smith improves to 10-1 overall while the Red Hawks fall to 5-6.
Three student-athletes reached double digits for the Herons, led by senior forward Stephanie Czajkowski (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden), who had 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Freshman Mollie Danahy (Troy, NY/Troy) added 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting while graduate student Paula Foote (Sidney, NY/Sidney) scored 16 points.
William Smith jumped out to a 21-7 lead eight minutes into the first half and held a wide margin before RPI pulled to within five points, 35-30, with 2:10 remaining. A three-point shot by Danahy with 54 seconds remaining put the visitors ahead by eight and they scored the next six points for a 14-point halftime lead (44-30).
The Herons held a double digit lead throughout the second half for their seventh win in a row.
In addition to their three players with at least ten points, William Smith saw Erin Cunningham (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) collect a team-best 10 rebounds with six points.
Rensselaer, which made 48.4% of its shots, got 12 points and 10 rebounds from senior Elizabeth Barker (Suffield, CT/Cathedral) and a team-best 16 points from guard Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy). Brittney O’Neal (Clinton, CT/The Morgan School) added 14 points and seven rebounds.
