TROY, N.Y. – Hamilton College senior forward Pumla Sathula (Soweto, South Africa/St. Anne’s-Belfield School) recorded 17 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, in beating Rensselaer, 76-62, this afternoon at Robison Gym. With the win, the Continentals improve to 6-5 overall (2-0 Liberty League), while the Red Hawks fall to 5-7 (0-2 Liberty).
Hamilton used a 10-2 run to open up a 21-12 lead at the 9:47 mark of the first half. Senior guard Jess Barrows (Old Saybrook, CT/Old Saybrook) hit a three-pointer to extend the Continentals edge to 28-13 with seven minutes to play in the first stanza. Hamilton took a 34-27 lead into halftime.
The Continentals kept Rensselaer at bay as it shot 6-8 (75%) from beyond the arc in the second half, finishing 10-16 (62.5%), from outside the arc.
Elizabeth Barker (Suffield, CT/Cathedral) made a free throw which brought the Red Hawks to within 54-48 with under nine minutes to play in the game, but a 17-2 run by the Colonials pushed the lead back to 71-50.
Sathula and Barrows each finished with 17 points, while juniors Sarah Schrader (Rangeley, ME/Rangeley Lake Regional) and Laura Wetmore (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Rensselaer senior forward Tory Lyons (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) scored a team-high 12 points, while grabbing four rebounds and picking up three assists. Barker finished with 11 points and a game-high 15 boards, while junior Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy) recorded 10 points, five assists and five steals.
Rensselaer is back in action on Tuesday night, when it faces Liberty League foe Vassar (6pm).
