CANTON, N.Y. – St. Lawrence used runs late in the first half and early in the second half to turn a three-point advantage into a 17-point bulge and the first place Saints went on to defeat the Rensselaer men’s basketball team, 77-51, in a Liberty League contest. SLU improves to 9-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference. RPI is now 6-9 and 1-3 in league play. The Red Hawks will play Clarkson tomorrow (4pm).
St. Lawrence led 24-21 before going on a 13-6 run to close out the final 5:01 of the first half for a 37-27 halftime advantage. The Saints then outscored the Red Hawks 18-11 in the first 9:19 of the second half for a 55-38 lead and they held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Three players reached double figures for SLU, led by senior guard Tyler Shaver (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free Academy), who had 14 points. Sophomore guard Andy Hoercher (Auburn, NY/Hotchkiss School) added 12 points and junior forward Bela Vonnak (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) scored 10 points. He also had seven rebounds.
Rensselaer was paced by senior Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy), who scored 12 points with a game-high eight rebounds. Senior Henrik Schou (Copenhagen, Denmark/EB Ersteinska) added 11 points and 11 rebounds for RPI, which saw 11 players get on the scoresheet.
