POTSDAM, N.Y. – Tim Marks had a goal and two assists to lead 10th-ranked Clarkson to a 5-2 win over the Rensselaer’s men’s hockey team in an ECAC Hockey game at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights improve to 14-7-2 overall and 9-3-1 in the league while RPI is now 8-15-3 and 3-7-2.
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead at 5:02 of the second period on a shorthanded goal by Matt Beca. The Engineers tied the game at 11:59 on freshman defenseman Bryan Brutlag’s second career goal with assists to classmates Tyler Helfrich and Scott Halpern. An unassisted goal by Brandon Defazio, the first of his career, at 15:26 put the home team ahead, 2-1, after two periods.
Clarkson increased its lead to 3-1 at 2:26 of the third period on a goal by Chris D’Alvise but RPI clawed back to within one on a power play goal by Andrew Lord. The senior forward was stationed in the slot when he tallied his fourth of the season. Helfrich and sophomore Paul Kerins were credited with the assists.
A Marks goal at 18:11 made it 4-2 before Shea Guthrie tallied with just 19 seconds remaining to close out the scoring. Marks, who assisted on the Golden Knights’ third goal, was set up by D’Alvise and Dan Tuttle. Mark earned his second assist on Guthrie’s power play goal.
Junior Mathias Lange finished with 26 saves for the Engineers, who have now lost 10 straight games. David Leggio stopped 23 shots for the win on the other end.
