TROY, N.Y. – The fourth-ranked Hobart College men's soccer team scored early in the first half and added another tally in the second for a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer at Renwyck Field. With the victory the Statesmen improve to 14-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the Liberty League. The Red Hawks move to 10-4-1, with a 5-1-0 mark in league play.
The two goals allowed by RPI are the first two it has surrendered in Liberty League play this season. The Red Hawks can win the regular season league title with a win tomorrow against Hamilton and a Hobart loss/draw to Vassar.
The Statesmen opened the scoring in the 10th minute after turning over Rensselaer just outside the host's penalty area. Senior Phillipp Schoeniger (Erlangen, Germany/Erlangen) took a pass from classmate Dan Riso (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) right of goal and finished low inside the far post for the early 1-0 lead.
Through 45 minutes, Hobart held a slight, 6-5, edge in total shots, including a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. However, RPI earned five corner kicks, to the Statesmen's two.
Hobart senior Tyler Webster (Acton, MA/Acton Boxborough) gave the visitors an insurance marker in the 51st minute, when he buried a rebound from inside the RPI six. After a cross from the left flank was played into the box, freshman Tommy Hayes (East Northport, NY/St. Anthony's) took a shot that was blocked by a Red Hawks defender. The ball deflected to Webster, who finished for the goal.
The Red Hawks were led offensively by senior Mike Henzel (Niwot, CO/Niwot) and sophomore Jeff Hebert (Derry, NH/Pinkton Academy), who each had a shot on goal. Sophomore Blake Adams (Cedar Grove, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) paced the team with two shots, but neither found the target.
Statesmen senior netminder Pete Van Dellon (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) earned the shutout, saving both shots he faced. Sophomore Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) recorded five saves between the sticks for Rensselaer.
Tomorrow's game against Hamilton is set for a 1pm kick-off at Renwyck Field. Live stats will be available here. The Statesmen travel to Poughkeepsie tomorrow to take on the Brewers at 1pm.
