TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Eric Lampe scored all three goals to lead Quinnipiac University to a 3-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in an ECAC Hockey game at the Houston Field House. Lampe scored twice in the second period and once in the third to lead the 16th-ranked Bobcats to the win.

With RPI holding a 1-0 lead after the first period, Lampe (Madison, WI/Chicago Steel) tied the game at 6:09 of the second stanza with a rebound goal. Lampe won the faceoff back to defenseman Dan Henningson (Edmonton, AB/Drayton Valley), who had his shot saved. Lampe collected the rebound and scored from the bottom of the right faceoff circle. Lampe put the visitors ahead 3:30 later when he scored on a wraparound. Classmate Mike Atkinson (Sparta, NJ/Vermont), who dug the puck out from against the end boards, earned the assist.

Lampe’s hat trick goal came at 15:01 of the third period. His initial shot was stopped by RPI netminder Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core), but he buried the rebound from just outside the crease. Henningson and David Marshall (Buffalo, MN/Chicago Steel) earned the assists.

The Engineers led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by senior Andrew Lord (West Vancouver, BC/Vernon Vipers), who redirected a Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) shot for a power play marker. Jonathan Ornelas (Mississauga, ON/Milton IceHawks) was also credited with an assist on the goal, which came at the 10:48 mark.

RPI sophomore Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) brought the Engineers within a goal with just 59 seconds remaining with Lange pulled for an extra attacker. Brutlag’s third goal of the year came on a rebound of a Polacek shot. Ornelas earned the secondary assist on the goal.

Lange finished with 26 saves for the Engineers while Bud Fisher (Peterborough, ON/Lindsay) stopped 21 shots on the other end.

Quinnipiac, which is now 15-7-3 overall and 7-3-3 in ECAC Hockey, is back in action on Saturday night at league foe Union. The Engineers, who are 9-16-3 and 4-8-2, host Princeton in a league game. RPI’s game is the 31st Annual Big Red Freakout!
