TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Dana Leonard (Cooperstown, NY/Cooperstown) tallied a team-high 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead Skidmore College to a 50-44 come-from-behind victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Liberty League women’s basketball action this evening. The Thoroughbreds improve to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the Red Hawks fall to 8-8 and 3-3 in the Liberty League.
Holding Skidmore to just 26.7% shooting in the opening half, Rensselaer held an eight-point lead (28-20) at the halftime. The Red Hawks led by as many as six points before the visitors began to mount a comeback. A three-pointer by junior Laurel Brown (South Hamilton, MA/Loomis Chaffee) shifted momentum at the 10:56 mark as Skidmore took a one-point lead.
Junior Elizabeth Barker (Suffield, CT/Cathedral), who posted a game-high 16 points and 15 rebounds, tied things up at 39-all with 6:52 remaining, but Skidmore regained the lead and continued to hold it through the end of the game.
A three-pointer by Missy Jackman (Danvers, MA/Danvers) narrowed the gap to 47-44, but a pair of free throws in the closing seconds by junior Kellye Caufield (Monroe, CT/Masuk) sealed the victory.
In addition to Leonard, Skidmore saw sophomore Sharlyn Harper (New York, NY/Holderness) post 10 points and six rebounds. She also had five assists, three blocks and four steals.
For the Red Hawks, which shot saw their three-game win streak come to an end, Barker added three assists and two steals. Jackman posted 12 points and four rebounds while junior Caitlyn Charest (Swansea, MA/LaSalle Academy) had a game-best six assists.
The Red Hawks are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host area-rival Union at 2pm. Skidmore heads to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for a match against Vassar (2pm).
