Box Score
TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team scored four unanswered goals to overcome a four-goal deficit and tie Dartmouth College, 4-4, in an ECAC Hockey game at the Houston Field House. The Engineers are now 9-17-4 overall and 4-9-3 in the league. The Big Green is now 8-11-3 and 3-10-2.
Dartmouth scored the lone goal of the first period and the first three in the second – all by the 7:05 mark – to take a 4-0 lead. The Engineers stormed back with three goals in the middle stanza – including their first at 7:54 – and one in the third for the tie.
RPI freshman Scott Halpern (Boca Raton, FL/Bay State Breakers) got the home team on the board just 49 seconds after Dartmouth’s fourth goal when he redirected a Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame Hounds) past Big Green’s goalie, Joe Grossman (Foxboro, MA/Waterloo). Freshman Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) pulled RPI to within two goals at 8:24 and classmate Tyler Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) made it 4-3 with a slap shot at 11:40.
Engineers junior Andrei Uryadov (St. Petersburg, Russia/South Kent School) tied the game with an unassisted, backhander from the bottom of the left face off circle just 5:37 into the third period.
Dartmouth jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on a power play goal by Josh Gillam (Peterborough, ON/Peterborough). The play developed when sophomore defenseman Peter Boldt (Greenwich, CT/Sodertalje) stopped a clearing attempt at the blue line and sent a pass to Gillam at the right faceoff circle. Gillam’s one-timer slipped past RPI senior netminder Jordan Alford (Red Deer, AB/Canmore Eagles) and across the goal line at the 11:10 mark.
The Big Green scored their first of the second period at 1:41 off the stick of Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, BC/Prince George Spruce Kings) from just outside the crease. Freshman Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, MO/Waterloo Blackhawks) made it 3-0 and a Dan Markowitz (Jericho, NY/Ohio Jr. Blackhawks) goal that went off an RPI defenseman put the visitors ahead, 4-0.
RPI saw junior Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) make 15 saves in relief of Alford, who stopped nine of the 12 shots he faced. Grossman stopped 29 shots for Dartmouth.
Rensselaer returns to the ice next Friday night when it travels to Colgate for a league game. The Big Green is at Union on Saturday night. Both games begin at 7pm.
