Men's Basketball Tripped Up by Dutchmen

Union downs Red Hawks, 67-61

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union outscored Rensselaer, 23-10, in the final 11 minutes of the second half and the Dutchmen held off the Red Hawks, 67-61, in a Liberty League contest. Union improves to 8-13 overall and 4-7 in the league, including four straight wins. RPI is now 9-12 and 4-6.

Senior center Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) scored 18 points, including the first 12 of the Dutchmen’s decisive run, with a team-high nine rebounds to lead the Dutchmen. Union’s Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY/Smithtown), a junior forward, led all scorers with 23 points. He had 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting with three assists, three rebounds and two steals in the first half. Joey Lokitis (Norton, MA/Phillips Academy) also reached double digits for the Dutchmen, tallying 14.

RPI was paced by senior forward Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy), who had 20 points and a game-high 16rebounds. Eight of his points and six of his caroms came in the first half. Senior guard Devin Galvin (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) added 14 points.

The Red Hawks are at Skidmore on Saturday at 4pm while the Dutchmen host Vassar on Saturday at the same time. Both games are league contests.
