ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men’s hockey team scored the first four goals of the game and went on to defeat Rensselaer, 7-1, Friday night at Lynah Rink. With the win, the Big Red improve to 12-10-3 overall and 10-7-1 in ECAC Hockey play. The Engineers run their record to 9-19-4 on the year, including 4-11-3 in conference play.
Six different skaters recorded goals for the Big Red, including Tyler Mugford (Prince Albert, SA), who opened the scoring at 11:39 of the first period. He was assisted Mike Devin (Scituate, MA).
The Big Red took a 2-0 advantage under five minutes later, when Michael Kennedy (Dorchester, ON) scored from Topher Scott (Buffalo Grove, IL) and Raymond Sawada (Richmond, BC).
Cornell out-shot RPI, 13-5, in the opening stanza.
Scott put the Big Red up, 3-0, at 3:42 of the second period. Kennedy and Sawada picked up the helpers on Cornell’s third goal.
Junior Colin Greening (St. John’s, Newfoundland) scored the Big Red’s fourth goal at 16:39 of the second, which was assisted by Scott and Devin.
RPI got on the board at 13:21 of the second stanza. Freshman Tyler Helfich (Calgary, AB) scored a power play marker to trim the Cornell lead to 4-1. The goal was assisted by Chase Polacek (Edina, MN) and Jake Morissette (Fruitvale, BC).
The Big Red scored three goals in the third period.
Scott had a game-high four points on a goal and three assists. Ben Scrivens (Spruce Grove, AB) made 16 saves for the Big Red, while RPI goaltender Jordan Alford (Red Deer, AB) made 25 stops.
