TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Tyler Helfrich had a pair of goals to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team to a 4-2 win over St. Lawrence University in an ECAC Hockey contest at the Houston Field House.

Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead at 7:38 of the first period and sophomore defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer (East Setauket, NY/New York Apple Core) doubled it just 20 seconds later. On Helfrich’s goal, his seventh of the season, the forward collected his own rebound from just outside the crease and stuffed the puck into the net. Burdgoerfer, who assisted on Helfrich’s goal, made it 2-0 at 7:58 on a slap shot from the right point. Andrei Uryadov (St. Petersburgh, Russia/South Kent School) and Matt Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Notre Dame Hounds) were credited with the assists.

St. Lawrence needed just 48 seconds to pull back to within one goal. With an extra attacker on the ice for a delayed RPI penalty, Jordan Hack (Stony Mountain, MN) sent the puck to the goal mouth, where freshman Bobby Torney (Shelburne, VT) scored on his own rebound. The goal, the first of Torney’s career, was scored at 8:46 of the first period.

Helfrich put the Engineers back ahead by two goals at 13:06 of the second period when he again jammed a puck into the goal from close range. Linemates Scott Halpern (Boca Raton, FL/Bay State Breakers) and Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels), who dug the puck off the back boards, tallied the assists.

St. Lawrence defenseman Matt Generous (Cheshire, CT) scored from the slot off a centering pass from the left side boards by Casey Parenteau (White Bear Lake, MN) at 5:40 of the third period to make it a one goal deficit for the visitors. Angers-Goulet sealed the win when he outraced a St. Lawrence defender for the puck and scored an unassisted, empty net goal with 1:06 left in the third period.

RPI’s Mathias Lange (Klagenfurt, Austria/New York Apple Core) finished with 26 saves to pick up the win while SLU’s John Hallas (Largo, FL) stopped 22 shots in defeat.

Rensselaer, which improves to 10-19-4 overall and 5-11-3 in ECAC Hockey, returns to the ice on Saturday night when Clarkson University visits the Field House. St. Lawrence, which drops to 10-17-4 and 5-12-2, travels to Schenectady to face Union on Saturday night. Both games begin at 7pm.
