TROY, N.Y. – The St. Lawrence University men’s basketball team never trailed and shot 66.7%, on its way to downing Rensselaer, 84-76, this afternoon at Robison Gym. With the win the first place Saints improve to 17-8 overall and finish with a 12-2 Liberty League record. The Red Hawks finish their season 11-14 and 6-8 in conference play.
Tyler Shaver (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free Academy) scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, including a three-pointer that gave St. Lawrence a 20-12 lead with 14:32 to play in the first half.
Rensselaer stayed close, throughout the rest of the opening stanza, thanks to 11 points on 4-5 shooting from senior Sam Zullo (Indian Lake, NY/Broadalbin-Perth). One of his three first-half threes cut the Saints advantage to 27-25 at the 9:43 mark.
St. Lawrence scored the final four points of the first to give it a 47-40 lead at the break. The Saints shot 72.0% in the first half.
The Red Hawks kept the game close despite St. Lawrence’s hot shooting. Battling back from a 12-point deficit with less than 12 minutes to play, a Devin Galvin (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) free throw narrowed the gap to just four points with one minute remaining.
Four free-throws from Andy Hoercher (Auburn, NY/Auburn) in the final minute secured the victory for St. Lawrence.
After Shaver’s 19, the Saints were led by Bela Vonnak (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) who had 16 points and three others who recorded ten points apiece.
Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh) led the Red Hawks with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Zullo chipped in with 15 points, while Ricky Philatre (Randolph, MA/Randolph) finished with ten points and four boards.
