GENEVA, N.Y. – The 15th-ranked William Smith women’s basketball team saw four players reach double figures in defeating Rensselaer, 70-55, Saturday afternoon. With the victory the Herons improve to 18-1 overall and 9-0 in Liberty League play. The Red Hawks are now 8-11 on the season, including 3-6 in the conference.
Rensselaer jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first ten points of the game. A Missy Jackman (Danvers, NY/Danvers) three-pointer capped off the run at the 15:37 mark of the first half.
The Herons answered with a run of their own, scoring 15 of the next 20 points to tie the game at 15-15. Two free throws by Stephanie Czajkowski (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) gave William Smith the lead with 7:06 remaining in the half.
Two Ellen High (Plaistow, NH/Timberlane Regional) free throws brought the Red Hawks within two at, 27-25, heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Herons outscored RPI, 43-30, shooting 45.7% from the floor. They led by as many as 21 points, at 4:48 of the second, after Molly Danahy (Troy, NY/Troy) gave William Smith a 65-44 advantage.
Latasha Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) led the Herons with 16 points and six rebounds. She was followed by Marisa Vespa (Watertown, NY/Immaculate Heart), who had 14 points and a game-high four steals.
Rensselaer Junior Elizabeth Barker (Suffield, CT/Cathedral) game-highs in both scoring and rebounding, recording 20 points and 17 boards. Jackman added seven points, six assists, three steals and a blocked shot.
Rensselaer is back in action next Friday (6pm) and Saturday (2pm) when it visits area-rivals Union and Skidmore, respectively.
